WORTH THINKING ABOUT

The decision to make first

Choose how you want to use the yard before choosing the shape of the pool. A layout can look beautiful on paper and still leave nowhere comfortable to sit.

01

Your favorite pool photo is a starting point.

Save the image that made you stop scrolling. Then look more closely: is it the pale stone, the long view across the water, the spa, or the way the planting softens the edge? Naming what you like gives the design conversation something useful to work with. You may not need the same size pool to get the feeling you want.

At Patriot’s Cornelius design center, the pool, spa, decking, turf and landscaping can be considered together. That matters because each choice uses space. A sun shelf takes up part of the water footprint. A row of loungers needs deck space behind it. A walkway should still work when someone has pulled out a dining chair.

02

Read the yard from the house outward.

Start at the door you actually use. Where do wet feet go? Where will you carry food? What will you see from the kitchen when the pool is not in use? A pool is part of the view from your home throughout the year, so those everyday sightlines deserve as much attention as the view from a drone.

Then look at the site: changes in elevation, existing trees, access for construction and places where rainwater collects. Property boundaries, easements and local requirements can affect the usable area. A survey is more helpful here than guessing from the fence line.

03

Spend on the things you will use.

List three essentials and three things you would enjoy if the scope allows. Perhaps the spa is essential and an elaborate water feature can wait. Perhaps you care more about open swimming space than a large shallow shelf. There is no universal upgrade list that makes sense for every household.

Bring a comfortable investment range to the conversation. It lets the team discuss the complete backyard, including the surrounding surfaces and site work, instead of developing a pool concept that leaves the rest of the project outside your budget. Design deliverables and fees are agreed before design work begins.

QUESTIONS BEFORE YOU COMMIT

Good questions.
Useful answers.

The details that help you choose your next step.

Can I start with only a rough idea?

Yes. Tell us what you want the backyard to feel like and how you plan to use it. You do not need a finished design.

Is the design included in the construction price?

Design deliverables, fees and construction pricing depend on the project. Confirm them with the team before authorizing design work.

Is a sun shelf worth the space it takes from swimming?

It depends on how you will use the pool. A shelf creates a place to lounge, but its footprint reduces the deeper swimming area. Put the chairs, steps and usable swim space on the same scaled plan before deciding.

What size pool works for a family?

Describe the activities first: swimming lengths, playing together, lounging or entertaining. Then compare layouts that leave room for those activities and a useful deck. Headcount alone does not tell you whether the shape and depth arrangement will feel right.

Can a smaller pool still feel like a complete backyard?

Yes. Comfortable seating, thoughtful views and an easy route from the house can matter more than another few feet of water. Ask to see the pool, patio and remaining garden as one layout rather than judging the pool outline by itself.

Can I bring photos from several different pools?

Absolutely. Tell us what you like in each image: the waterline tile, the shade, the shelf or simply the atmosphere. That helps separate the features you want from details that may not suit your property or budget.
